Travel the world but protect it, too

Happy Earth Day, All!

Traveling the world is a remarkable way to get to know different people, cultures, and traditions, but it's important to step back and remember a very important quote by Wendell Berry, "the earth is what we all have in common." To be able to see the wonders of the world, it is on us to step up and do our part. Here are some suggestions on how we can take care of the world so that we can continue to marvel at its beauty for years to come.

#1 | Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Think about easy ways to reduce waste in your day-to-day life. Use reusable utensils and plates. Go paperless! Start with something like moving all of your bills paperless (no one wants to see a physical reminder of those anyway). Make use of your reusable water bottle versus plastics. Educate yourself on proper recycling and put it to practice. Need help? I found this super simple guide (you're welcome) to get started. Making simple changes can lead to massive results.

#2 | Shop Wisely

Living in the midwest requires a wardrobe for all four seasons. One easy way to save on both cost and environmental impact is by buying second-hand. Consider checking out local physical thrift stores (when we're not sheltering-in-place) or even online stores such as Patagonia Worn Wear or ThreadUP. Need more options? Shop with organizations that have a sustainability-focused mission or goal.

#3 | Plant a Tree (or Pay for a Tree to be Planted)

Enjoy fresh air? Of course, you do! Keep that fresh air flowing by planting a tree. Don't have the space, time, or resources to plant a tree in your yard? Consider donating to plant a tree. You could check out One Tree Planted or Stand for Trees.

#4 | Clean Up Your Neighborhood

Take a stand and clean-up your nearby neighborhood. Not only does this help with aesthetics, but it helps to avoid accidents (you don't want to go to the ER for tetanus shot during a pandemic do you? didn't think so). Picking up trash around your neighborhood protects animals, birds, fish, and plant life while sending a message to others that you care about this shared space.

#5 | Research Sustainable Travel

Yeah, you shouldn't travel right now, but that doesn't mean you can't still plan! While planning, look for ways to eat and drink local (local wine=love), travel by land, pack light, and use public transit. These are just small simple ways to ensure you and the earth enjoy your travels.
